I chose Grainger Market as a good site for an aquaponic system, because of its fresh fruit and veg stalls along with the fish sellers. These are good visual links to the life that the aquaponic system would bring. The Prototype design would be used as an educational tool, showing customers how food can be grow anywhere, even indoors in an urban environment. Like all architectural project, exploring the history of the site is necessary. Grainger Market has a rich history of nearly 200 years, being the biggest covered market in the world when it was built by John Dobson.
Did you know that the Grainger Market originally had two water fountains, one at either end of the arcade. The fountains were relocated from the Market to a couple of City Parks but have since been removed. Evidently the water pumps for the fountains are still in situ and are housed in the air raid shelters beneath the floor of the Market.
The two fountains can 'just' be made out in this photo of the Grand Opening of the Grainger Market, in 1835 . . .

Could these pumps be re-established for the aquaponic systems? An interesting find...
